SUBLIME CINEMA #383 – VAGABOND

My favorite Agnes Varda film, a masterpiece told so directly and with such focus that it hurts when it ends. It’s a story told in a half-documentary style, about a woman who has dropped out of life so completely that she shuns even the people who offer help. She wants nothing, needs nothing, only to move along passively, allowing the world to decide her fate. The ultimate floating road movie – somebody with no purpose, no ambition, no possessions or identity.

Sandrine Bonnaire is extraordinary, and portrays one of the most memorable female characters in a film I have seen.
