selection of encounters with women from the last week

I traveled to Orlando. It’s hot there, totally open and flat. I met more Brazilians than ever before. Universal Studios Florida is a flat place, too, and I missed the mountains of Hollywood. But I always miss mountains.

Two teenage girls pointed their wands at a sensor located beneath a dragon in Diagon Alley.

They said, “This is supposed to work!”

I had good shawarma at a small place near my hotel. The young woman ahead of me in the line spoke clear and Cuban Spanish to the proprietor, who I’m guessing was from a country somewhere in the middle east. She was completely confident in her communication and didn’t try to translate a single word. He kept up. A little girl, daughter of the owners I suppose, sat to the side and worked on her homework. You know, I only paid $35 a night for my hotel, and I’m no businessman so that’s fine. An older woman sat across from me at the airport and rubbed her foot on my leg. She wouldn’t make eye contact so I shifted and ignored her. I also traveled to Hollywood immediately after Orlando and it was mountains all around. There were a lot of moments of staring out at them. You don’t need to think when you’re sizing up mountains. On the studio tour, I saw a lot of young women working on various movie and television productions. Just walking around. I considered what it must be like to be a PA on a modern production, then bummed myself out because a young woman isn’t necessarily a PA. Overall, a lot of people looked happy to be at these places, and it was good to see people be fans.

My family are growing older, which is sobering. I don’t think about that much. It’s the growing kids that really set the tone. My niece is two and terrible. She does as she pleases, and has more energy than I remember kids having. My other nieces are older and more mellow, close to women now. My cousin, also a teenager, was there and adapting to life in the United States. She was hyper focused on skincare during my visit. I suppose I am growing older as well, closer to some dream life in the desert. My skin is terrible. It’s oily in places and dry in others. The sun would make a good excuse.

A coworker I once had a crush on, and who was into me, DM’ed me on Twitter. She was an artist when I knew her a decade ago. I haven’t replied. I wish I’d run into her out in the wild instead. A random encounter, think on the spot, passing by at a coffee place or swapmeet. Nothing electronic. It’s all a bit sad to me. I don’t want advice.

A coworker I once had a crush on, and who was way into me, DM’ed me on Twitter. She was an artist when I knew her a decade ago. I haven’t replied and probably will ignore it. I’m worried about writing this because I probably can’t do the sentiment justice, but I’m really into http://joanperfect.tumblr.com. I reckon it’s a comic series, but more vignettes maybe. Moments, you know? Moments are important and sometimes a life is just moments. I think about how that can be expressed in an art sort of way. That comic series captures something that is difficult to express. I’m not certain about the artist’s identity or intent, but then I don’t want to know. The work is best appreciated while it’s here.
