20th Century Women had me floating in the black for its entire runtime. It was a relatable, funny escape. The people in the film expressed complexity, rarely giving straight answers. (Obfuscation and avoidance are central to complexity, and I don’t know if that’s right.) The topics of generational understanding of relationships, feminism, energy crises, hippy and punk countercultures, or governmental angst were all woven into the film the way they tend to get woven into life. There were rainbow blur shots of cars on the road that were California road film 101. I appreciated the landscape and its inhabitants as a Californian, and remembered that perhaps this is a unique place after all.

I had more thoughts but they’re gone already. I reckon they would’ve added up to: I liked it.
